idk about you guys, but one of the small rwby scenes that make me cry the most remains ruby and qrow’s hug at the v6 finale. volume 6 had a big emphasis on ruby’s role as a leader and taking charge when everyone else felt hopeless, as well as qrow spiralling deeper into depression, which is why this moment means so much to me!

first, qrow praises ruby for her good work against the leviathan. this is one of the only times qrow really expresses support this volume, since his arc was about him getting over his guilt and complex feelings towards the whole ozpin situation. ruby snapping at him before and during the airship mission was his initial wake-up call, and you can really tell he’s proud of and thankful for her.

then qrow raises his flask on impulse. ruby looks so disappointed, scared and BETRAYED here. she thought qrow was about to ruin the whole moment and go back to square one, like none of it ever mattered.

but qrow doesn’t even look at ruby’s face. he doesn’t need to. before he’s even finished talking, he realizes what he’s doing and how much it would hurt ruby, as well as himself, and immediately puts the flask back down.

ruby smiles in relief. qrow didn’t have to say anything here, this action alone was proof enough that he genuinely cares about her, AND that he’s self-aware enough to start turning his life around for the better, BY HIMSELF.

then ruby quickly embraces him and says “i love you too”. at first, qrow is visibly shocked and confused. he hasn’t exactly been there for her lately, he’s even walked away from her when she needed his guidance and lashed out at her when things didn’t go as planned. he probably feels like he doesn’t deserve this. but ruby is always honest, genuine and caring, no matter the circumstances.

but eventually, qrow accepts it. he smiles back softly and accepts ruby’s unconditional kindness. and for the first time throughout this journey, he’s actually happy, and i think he finally understands that he’s worthy of happiness, too.

also this smile at the end when ruby walks away just melts my soul bye

What you’ll find below is a semi-cinematographic analysis on how the Dojo scene plays a vital role in cementing Ruby’s perspective on Oscar, separating him from Oz as a person in her mind, and how the details of their relationship seems to indicate that this ship is indeed going to be a slowburn

Because of @littlemisssquiggles’s really amazing analysis on this scene last year I hadn’t really gone back to take a closer look from outside that lense and perspective, and boy, have I been missing out.

Not that I’d be able to see it until this volume (anyway), and actually that’s where I want to start.

See, Ruby’s development in vol6 has been one about growing up, about learning to no longer blindly follow authority figures and being a good little school girl. And the person, other than herself, that has been most instrumental to that process is Maria Calavera.

In episode 8 she chides Ruby for treating her like she would treat Ozpin; with deference and respect, as somebody above her.

And she does this by telling her to “sit back down”, and that made me realise that Ruby always stands the same way when addressing Oz:

With her hands folded in front of herself.

So she has habits when it comes to body language, which betray the way she sees the other person.

He looks so sad here, and he can’t even stand to look at Ruby. You can’t tell me that she doesn’t remind him of Summer right now, and that this memory still brings him so much pain, and it also hurts me how much he’s hurting.
