hey does nobody else think it’s absolute bullshit how Banana Fish got nominated for one award only (Best Director) in the Crunchyroll Anime Awards despite being one of the best anime of the year, with an amazing plot, three dimensional characters with depth, and a great OP and Ending sequence?
I am especially fucking angry about Uchida Yuuma not being nominated for Best JP VA for the amazing and heartbreaking performance he gave as Ash’s voice actor. His monologue in Episode 19 stands out the most to me, and absolutely made me bawl my eyes out because it was that emotional.
It’s almost like, and hear me out this might sound crazy, Banana Fish is being written off as a Yaoi and subsequently given no attention, nor any respect. This, despite the fact that it’s absolutely not a fucking Yaoi.
Banana fish is a harrowing tale of a teenager never getting the chance to grow up normally, it’s a story of trauma and trying to overcome that trauma. It’s a story of revenge, and it’s a story of hope and hope lost. It’s also a story of love and how it can save you. The fact that they consider everything else in the story irrelevant since that two men happen to love each is horseshit. Banana fish, along with it’s story has fucking awesome action sequences and political intrigue that keep it interesting and keep you on the edge of your seat.

Okay, I still have a lot of feelings about the ending of banana fish, but one thing I haven’t really seen anyone talk about is that part after the gang busts Ash out of Fox’s hideout. There’s that scene where they’re regrouping and Ash (understandably to us) snaps at Cain for touching his shoulder. Everyone kinda chalks it up to Ash having been beat while in there and him needing a moment because he’s in pain, but then it focuses on Eiji and the look he has shows that he knows it’s more than that. He knows they did more than just beat him, and he just has this look of pain in his eyes for Ash. And then he goes over to Ash and just gently, holds him. And you can see Ash shaking because of what he had just went through and all of the pain that he’s bottling up, but slowly he relaxes into Eiji, and stops. Like, I know everyone loses their shit about the kiss and all the (high key) flirting through the series, but this scene is honestly what proves to me that they were more than just friends. More than best friends. The trust that Ash has in Eiji, to the extent that he allows himself to be so vulnerable, even without words, even without telling him, is love and it’s so tragic and beautiful.

in all seriousness, this is the kind of love that most people will go their entire lives without experiencing. Ash and Eiji were so lucky in that regard. but so unlucky in another because of their circumstances. Yoshida…who gave you the RIGHT?
